In the 18 schools we surveyed in 2080, 34% of girls who finished Class 8 did not reach Class 10. For boys the figure was 12%.
Chhori Padhau Abhiyan works on the reasons families gave us: cost, distance, housework and early marriage. School management committees select scholarship recipients, girls who live far away receive bicycles and travel together, and teachers run evening classes in the months before exams. Parents meet every month to review attendance.
